Rosacea-Friendly Skincare and Beauty Routine

I’ve always been a bit quick to flush and blush – my cheeks tend to give my nervousness or stress away. Now in my fourties, still prone to redness and a dermatologist diagnoses of mild rosacea later, I have come to realise that I can exert some control over it. I do still blush when I’m nervous, and look a bit like a bright beetroot for at least an hour after exercise, but I’ve found some products and treatments that are helping me keep things under control in New Zealand.

The general rule of thumb is not to use a lot of products, in other words do not product hop and beauty boxes are definitely not your friend. Keeping it simple is best in rosacea prone skin. I use a gentled and soothing cleanser, either La Roche Posay Toleriane Hydrating Gentle Cleanser or Avene Tolerance Extreme Cleansing Lotion (For Hypersensitive & Allergic Skin).

I follow it with Timeless Skin Care 20% Vitamin C Serum + Vitamin E + Ferulic Acid as my antioxidant, which works very effectively without the potential for irritation and inflammation. For mornings, a great redness battling tool is Skin Ceuticals Redness Neutralizer - followed by EltaMD UV Elements Moisturizing Physical Tinted Facial Sunscreen SPF 44, is is my favourite SPF of all time. I find it calming for my skin and it delivers the most beautiful tint that makes skin glow. SPF is non negotiable and an integral part of controlling rosacea.

Under the advice of my dermatologist, I have also found that azelaic acid (Jan Marini RosaLieve Redness Reducing Complex Face Lotion) is extremely beneficial in calming skin due to its anti inflammatory action. As is niacinimide, a great ingredient that helps to repair and strengthen skin barrier function EltaMD PM Therapy Facial Moisturizer is great at also helping to lock in much-needed moisture and alleviate the dryness that can accompany rosacea.

I’ve also recently started a course of vascular laser treatments, again, under the advice of my dermatologist and have high hopes for a further reduction in redness.

In terms of makeup, it can be my very best friend on those “very red mornings”! I swear by BareMinerals Original SPF 15 Foundation its light, dewy, gentle and perfects the skin like no other! As for blush, which I refuse to give up on, I find that peach tones work beautifully on redness prone skin, BareMinerals Blush - Vintage Peach is lovely.

Though there isn’t a cure for rosacea, monitoring what triggers it can help you to manage it. Heat and dairy causes mine to flair up, for example, so I avoid it as much as possible. Extreme temperatures, spicy foods and stress are all proven to cause mayhem. So, it s something to be aware of.
